Rising geopolitical tensions and increasing protectionism have heightened the risk of economic fragmentation, even as global economies remain deeply interconnected through international trade, supply chains, and capital flows. With slower growth and limited fiscal space, economies are now more vulnerable to external shocks such as unexpected shifts in monetary policy, commodity price swings, extreme weather and financial market volatility. The fallout from isolated events could also easily propagate across the globe. As the adage goes: “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link”.
 
 
Against this backdrop of heightened vulnerabilities, economic and financial cooperation is more important than ever. It allows policymakers to monitor emerging risks to financial stability, collaborate on regulatory issues, and implement proper safeguards for the financial system.
